Nocturne Meridian Vale, 2025
Nocturne Meridian Vale by Jarinzo Tanabata composes an oil-based meditation on the liminality of existence, silence, and ontological withdrawal. The canvas presents a bleak yet sublimely rendered landscape—at once frozen in time and rich with metaphysical suggestion. Though formally situated within the tradition of Romantic and post-existential landscape painting, this work transcends genre and medium to become a visual metaphysics.
Rendered in austere greys, diffused blacks, and fog-muted blues, the piece is notable for its tonal restraint and philosophical ambition. A skeletal forest looms over a glass-still body of water, its reflection functioning as an epistemic veil—echoing what is seen, but offering no certainty of depth. The light, barely perceptible, filters through the mist like a distant memory, refusing to illuminate and instead choosing to hover. There is no clear directionality—only the presence of stasis.
