The Rebels Flame, 2022
The Rebel's Flame by Jarinzo Tanabata is a powerful visual narrative that captures a moment of profound tension within a secluded, tropical community. The painting juxtaposes the beauty of a vibrant, sunlit beach with the dark, shadowy figures lurking in the background figures who have been exiled from their tribe.
The unity of the scene is disrupted by the stark division within the group of figures depicted. On the left side of the composition, a large procession of individuals marches along the beach in a seemingly unified and purposeful movement. Clad in traditional garb, they embody the cohesion and continuity of the community, their path symbolizing the journey of life, culture, and shared values.
In sharp contrast, the right side of the canvas reveals a smaller group of outcasts, isolated from the main procession. These figures, shunned and embittered, crouch in the shadows of the dense foliage, their faces obscured by darkness and their bodies tense with defiance. The focal point of their rebellion is a small, but intensely bright fire the flame of rebellion which they have ignited at the edge of the jungle. The fire’s vivid red and orange hues stand in stark opposition to the cool, calm colors of the surrounding environment, symbolizing anger, dissent, and the potential for destruction.
The fire itself is both literal and metaphorical, representing the spark of dissent that threatens to disrupt the harmony of the larger group. It is a flame born out of rejection, a desperate act of defiance by those who have been cast aside. The placement of the fire near the procession suggests the potential for this rebellion to spread, endangering the unity and peace of the entire community.
